Biography and academic career
Uwayd ibn Ayyad ibn Ayid (also written Abid) al-Kuhayli al-Mutrafi was born in 1353 AH (1934 CE) and lived in Mecca . He pursued higher education in Islamic studies and served as an associate professor at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca, where he taught and participated in graduate examination committees . He died in 1429 AH (2008 CE).
Scholarly contributions and research
Al-Mutrafi's scholarly output addressed Quranic exegesis, theology, biographical history, and jurisprudence. In his study Ayat Itab al-Mustafa fi Daw al-Isma wal-Ijtihad ("Verses of Divine Admonition to the Chosen One in Light of Infallibility and Independent Reasoning"), he examined Quranic passages addressed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that contain divine reproof (‘itab), classifying them into categories of guidance, alerting, and caution, while framing them in accordance with Prophetic infallibility and legal reasoning .
In early Islamic biographical studies, he published the research treatise Waraqa ibn Nawfal fi Butnan al-Jannah through the Muslim World League, arguing that Waraqa ibn Nawfal had not adopted Christianity as often claimed, but was rather an adherent of pure monotheism (al-Hanifiyyah) . He also contributed to contemporary juristic deliberations, participating in discussions of the Islamic Fiqh Academy on commercial contracts such as manufacturing agreements (istisna‘) , and writing on ritual law in his treatise Al-Tuhr fi Ada Fard al-Zuhr, which argued for the obligation of performing the Zuhr prayer for those who omit Friday prayer on days when Friday and Eid coincide .
