Uthman Ibn Jami (d. 1240 AH / 1824 CE) was a Hanbali jurist and judge from Najd who served in Bahrain and al-Zubayr, known for his extensive legal commentary al-Fawaid al-Muntakhabat fi Sharh Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat.
Origin and Education
He was Uthman ibn Abd Allah ibn Jum'ah ibn Jami' ibn Ubayd ibn Abd Rabbih, belonging to the Banu al-Khazraj of the Ansar. In an inscription on the back of his commentary, he recorded his lineage and regional affiliation as al-Najdi, al-Ansari al-Khazraji, and later al-Zubayri. His ancestor Jami' originally moved from Medina to settle in al-Qasab before relocating to Jalajil, where his grandfather Jum'ah was born and subsequently traveled to Sham to pursue scholarly studies.
Ibn Jami studied jurisprudence under the prominent Hanbali scholar Muhammad ibn Fayruz, having earlier read a portion of Mukhtasar al-Muqni' with Ibn Fayruz's father. Under Muhammad ibn Fayruz, he trained extensively in Hanbali fiqh, inheritance laws (fara'id), and Arabic grammar. He also traveled to Mecca and Medina, studying jurisprudence, literature, inheritance laws, and arithmetic under the scholars of the Two Holy Mosques, and journeyed to Sham and Aleppo.
Judicial Career and Standing
When the people of Bahrain requested a resident scholar from Muhammad ibn Fayruz to serve as their judge, mufti, and instructor, Ibn Fayruz sent Ibn Jami to them. He presided over the judiciary in Bahrain for many years, gaining broad respect and affection among both the local leadership and the populace for his integrity and piety. He also lived in al-Zubayr and assumed the judicial office there.
Scholars commended Ibn Jami for his legal competence, devotion, and upright character. His teacher Muhammad ibn Fayruz praised his comprehensive mastery, piety, and generosity. The biographer Ibn Humayd highlighted his discernment and virtuous conduct, while Ibn Sanad celebrated his nightly devotion and Quranic recitation in verse within Saba'ik al-Asjad. Ibn Jami authored al-Fawaid al-Muntakhabat fi Sharh Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat, an extensive commentary spanning around sixty fascicles on Ibn Balban's concise legal primer Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat, in which he elucidated legal rulings and integrated ethical and juristic benefits.
