Talha Muhammad al-Masir (fl. 1432 AH / 2011 CE) is a contemporary Egyptian author and researcher, known for his critical study al-Duktur Ali Jumaa: Ila Ayn?!!! (Dr. Ali Gomaa: To Where?!) .

Critical Focus and Methodology

Al-Masir wrote his principal work in Cairo, completing it in Rajab 1432 AH (2011 CE) to evaluate the scholarly methodology, public discourse, and legal rulings of the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Ali Gomaa, particularly following Gomaa's assumption of the post of Grand Mufti . The book analyzes Gomaa's intellectual output across two primary axes :

  1. Methods of Persuasion: Al-Masir critically surveys Gomaa's rhetorical and dialectical strategies, highlighting issues such as internal contradictions, distortion of citations, reliance on weak or aberrant legal opinions, the use of ambiguous terminology, and drawing conclusions unsupported by sound premises .
  2. Reconciliation of Islamic Law with Modern Realities: Al-Masir examines Gomaa's framework for aligning Islamic jurisprudence with contemporary social and political conditions, critiquing his positions on the implementation of Islamic law, residency and integration in non-Muslim societies, interfaith relations, and female circumcision .

Al-Masir's critique has been utilized and cited by contemporary scholars engaging in theological and legal debates surrounding official Egyptian religious institutions and their modern fatwas .
