Scholarly contributions

Al-Ruhayli's scholarly work focuses on legal theory, jurisprudence, and traditionist historiography . In legal theory, he authored Mabahith al-Amr allati Intaqadaha Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya fi Majmu al-Fatawa ("Issues of Legal Command Critiqued by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya in Majmu' al-Fatawa"), in which he conducted a comprehensive survey of Ibn Taymiyya's legal discussions to extract his critiques of standard usuli formulations—such as the relationship between divine will and command, and whether a single action can simultaneously be commanded and prohibited—and how they intersect with orthodox theological principles .

His legal scholarship also addresses juristic balancing through his treatise Qawa'id Ta'arud al-Masalih wa-l-Mafasid ("Rules Concerning Conflicting Benefits and Harms") . In the field of early historical writing, his academic research includes al-Tarikh inda Ibn Abi Shayba ("History According to Ibn Abi Shayba"), examining the historiographical methods of the third-century traditionist Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba .
