Suad Zarzur is a contemporary author and scholar of Islamic jurisprudence, best known for her manual Fiqh al-Ibadat 'ala al-Madhhab al-Hanbali ("The Jurisprudence of Acts of Worship According to the Hanbali School") .
Education and Scholarly Activity
Zarzur studied Hanbali jurisprudence under Shaykh Ahmad al-Shami, the mufti and scholar of Duma . Recognizing a need across the Arab and Islamic worlds—particularly in regions where the Hanbali school is prevalent, such as the Hijaz, the Arabian Gulf, Syria, and Iraq—she composed Fiqh al-Ibadat 'ala al-Madhhab al-Hanbali as a simplified textbook aimed at presenting the practical rulings necessary for properly performing acts of ritual worship .
She compiled the core material of the work from the lessons received directly from her teacher Ahmad al-Shami and enriched the content by consulting well-known reference manuals within the Hanbali tradition . She documented the legal rulings with direct textual evidence from the Quran and canonical hadith collections . Prior to publication, Zarzur presented the draft to Ahmad al-Shami, who provided observations and revisions that she incorporated into the finalized text .
Reception
In a preface written for her work dated 5 Ramadan 1405 AH (24 May 1985 CE), Shaykh Ahmad al-Shami commended Zarzur's efforts, highlighting the clear organization and presentation of Hanbali legal rulings alongside their foundational proofs from the Quran, the Sunnah, and the juridical reasoning of the school's authorities .
