Shawqi Bashir al-Majid is a Sudanese Islamic scholar and academic affiliated with Omdurman Islamic University, best known for his critical study Mawqif al-Jumhuriyyin min al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah ("The Position of the Republicans on the Prophetic Sunnah") .

Scholarly Contributions

Bashir's academic work focused on examining modern ideological trends and defending the authority of the Prophetic Sunnah against heterodox interpretations . His primary monograph, Mawqif al-Jumhuriyyin min al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah, was published by the Muslim World League in Mecca in Safar 1408 AH (September 1987 CE) as part of its monthly Da'wat al-Haqq series .

In this treatise, Bashir analyzed and critiqued the theological doctrines of the Sudanese Republican Brothers movement founded by Mahmoud Mohamed Taha . He argued that the movement's thought drew upon an eclectic mixture of classical esoteric (batini) doctrines, monism (wahdat al-wujud), Baháʼí incarnationism, existentialism, communism, Darwinian evolutionary concepts, and psychoanalytic theory .

Bashir specifically scrutinized the Republicans' approach to Hadith literature, refuting their claim that the Prophetic Sunnah is merely a transitional stage (marhaliyyah) meant for an initial phase of emulation rather than a permanent legislative foundation . He also addressed their division of the Sunnah into habitual practices (sunnat 'adah) and devotional practices (sunnat 'ibadah), as well as their classification of many established Sunnah traditions and Prophetic approvals as religious innovations (bida'), contrasting these views with mainstream Islamic legal theory and theology .
