Shaban Muhammad Ismail (d. 1443 AH / 2021–2022 CE) was an Islamic scholar specializing in legal theory (usul al-fiqh) and Quranic sciences, known for his work on Quranic orthography, Rasm al-Mushaf wa Dabtuhu bayn al-Tawqif wa al-Istilahat al-Haditha .

Scholarly Contributions

Ismail wrote extensively on Islamic legal theory and Quranic studies, authoring Usul al-Fiqh: Tarikhuhu wa Rijaluhu on the history and major scholars of jurisprudence, alongside a specialized study on abrogation titled Nazariyyat al-Naskh fi al-Sharai' al-Samawiyya . In his research on the 'Uthmanic codex, Rasm al-Mushaf wa Dabtuhu bayn al-Tawqif wa al-Istilahat al-Haditha, he examined the origins and legal status of Quranic orthography and diacritical marks, arguing that the traditional script is divinely prescribed (tawqifi) and that departing from it in favor of modern standard Arabic spelling conventions is impermissible . In addition to his own writings, he edited classical texts in legal theory, producing critical editions of works such as commentaries on al-Baydawi's Minhaj al-Wusul .
