Early life and education

Saud al-Shuraim was born in Riyadh in 1386 AH (1966 CE). He received his primary education there at the Arin school, his intermediate schooling at al-Namudhajiyya, and his secondary education at al-Yarmuk al-Shamila. He subsequently pursued higher studies at the College of Usul al-Din at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, graduating in 1409 AH. He then enrolled at the Higher Judicial Institute (al-Ma'had al-'Ali lil-Qada'), earning a master's degree in 1413 AH.

In 1416 AH, al-Shuraim obtained his doctorate with distinction from the College of Sharia at Umm al-Qura University in Makkah, with a recommendation for publication. His dissertation consisted of a study and critical edition of al-Wadih fi Usul al-Fiqh by the Hanbali jurist Abu al-Wafa Ibn Aqil; it was supervised by Ahmad Fahmi Abu Sunna and examined by Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Turki and Ali ibn Abbas al-Hakami.

Teachers

Al-Shuraim studied directly under several senior Saudi scholars in study circles and traditional lessons, prominent among whom were Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, Abdullah ibn Jibrin, Abdullah ibn Aqil, Abd al-Rahman al-Barrak, Abd al-Aziz al-Rajihi, Fahd al-Humayn, Abdullah al-Ghudayyan, and Salih al-Fawzan.

Career and appointments

In 1412 AH, King Fahd ibn Abd al-Aziz issued a royal decree appointing al-Shuraim as an imam and khatib at al-Masjid al-Haram, where he became widely known for his recitation and sermons. The following year, in 1413 AH, a royal order named him a judge at the Grand Sharia Court in Makkah. He was subsequently assigned to teach regular lessons in the Grand Mosque of Makkah following the evening (maghrib) prayer, lecturing in theology (aqidah), jurisprudence (fiqh), Quranic exegesis (tafsir), and hadith, in addition to issuing fatwas during the pilgrimage seasons.

Following the completion of his doctoral studies, he was appointed an assistant professor in the College of Sharia at Umm al-Qura University. Alongside his academic and administrative duties, al-Shuraim conducted outreach tours inside and outside Saudi Arabia, participating in Islamic conferences and inaugurating mosques and cultural centers. He is also a poet, having composed verses on multiple religious occasions and elegies (ritha') honoring deceased scholars. His scholarly output includes a manual on pilgrimage rites titled al-Minhaj lil-Mu'tamir wal-Hajj and a doctrinal commentary titled al-Tuhfa al-Makkiyya.
