Salih Ali al-Awd is a contemporary Islamic author and researcher known for his treatise Tahrim Kitabat al-Quran al-Karim bi-Huruf Ghayr Arabiyya (The Prohibition of Writing the Noble Quran in Non-Arabic Letters).
Activities and Scholarly Advocacy
Salih al-Awd was affiliated with Islamic educational and religious institutions in France, where he served as a representative of the Islamic Education Center (مركز التربية الإسلامية). In that capacity, he took part in an Islamic symposium organized in France alongside several representative bodies, including the General League of Muslims of France, the Union of Islamic Organizations, and the Islamic Center of Réunion Island. The gathering, which opened with a recitation by Ali Abd al-Rahman al-Hudhayfi, an imam and preacher at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, featured an address delivered by the Islamic Education Center outlining the gathering's objectives to counter proposals aimed at transcribing or altering the text of the Quran. The conference concluded with unanimous resolutions upholding Islamic legal rulings that prohibit recording any part of the Quran in non-Arabic alphabets, warning against the linguistic and semantic corruption of the scripture, and calling for monitoring literature that seeks to misrepresent the Quranic text.
Salih al-Awd documented these legal opinions and scholarly consensus in his single-volume work Tahrim Kitabat al-Quran al-Karim bi Huruf Ghayr Arabiyya Ajamiyya aw Latiniyya (The Prohibition of Writing the Noble Quran in Non-Arabic, Foreign, or Latin Letters), which was prefaced by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Abyat and published by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Dawah, and Guidance in Saudi Arabia in 1416 AH. The treatise compiles official resolutions and legal verdicts from prominent scholarly councils and bodies, such as committees formed at Al-Azhar, arguing that the preservation of the Quranic wording necessitates its transcription exclusively in the Arabic script and prohibiting transliteration into Latin or other foreign letters.
