Nur al-Din Itr (d. 1442 AH / 2020 CE) was a Syrian scholar of hadith and Quranic sciences from Aleppo, known for his foundational textbook Manhaj al-Naqd fi Ulum al-Hadith (Methodology of Criticism in Hadith Sciences) and his critical editions of classical hadith manuals .
Academic Career and Teaching
Nur al-Din Muhammad Itr al-Halabi served as professor of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and hadith across the faculties of Sharia and Arts at Damascus University and the University of Aleppo . He also served as head of the Department of Quranic Sciences and the Sunnah at the Faculty of Sharia at Damascus University .
Scholarly Contribution
Itr's scholarship focused on systematizing classical hadith methodology and defending traditional standards of transmission. In Manhaj al-Naqd fi Ulum al-Hadith, he presented hadith terminology and textual criticism not as disjointed historical rules, but as an integrated critical theory designed to evaluate chains of transmission (isnad) and texts (matn), addressing modern and orientalist critiques of hadith literature . In al-Ittijahat al-Amma lil-Ijtihad wa Makanat al-Hadith al-Ahadi al-Sahih fiha (General Trends in Legal Reasoning and the Status of the Authentic Solitary Hadith Within Them), he examined the principles of legal reasoning (ijtihad) and the legal authority of solitary prophetic reports (khabar al-wahid) .
Alongside his original writings, Itr edited major classical texts in hadith terminology and biographical evaluation, including Ibn al-Salah's Ulum al-Hadith (Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah), Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Nuzhat al-Nazar, Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali's Sharh Ilal al-Tirmidhi, al-Dhahabi's al-Mughni fi al-Du'afa, and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's al-Rihla fi Talab al-Hadith .
