Najih Abd Allah (fl. 14th–15th century AH / 20th century CE) is an Indonesian Islamic educator and scholar who served as the director of the Maskumambang Islamic Institute in Gresik, East Java.

Career and Scholarly Contribution

Abd Allah led the Maskumambang Islamic Institute (معهد مسكوممبان الإسلامي) in Gresik, an educational establishment whose faculty had earlier been intensely opposed to Wahhabism and critical of its adherents before reformist theological teachings gained currency in Indonesian institutions.

He contributed to academic research on Islamic movements in Southeast Asia with his treatise Ta'aththur al-Da'awat al-Islahiyya fi Indunisiya bi-Da'wat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab ("The Influence of Reformist Movements in Indonesia by the Call of Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab"). The paper was presented during the "Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Week" conference organized by Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh and subsequently published within its compiled proceedings volume. In this research, Abd Allah surveyed the development of Indonesian reformist organizations, including Muhammadiyah and Jam'iyyat al-Islah wa-l-Irshad—the latter founded following the arrival of the Sudanese scholar Ahmad Surkati in Jakarta—and documented the adoption of Kitab al-Tawhid ("The Book of Monotheism") as a primary curriculum text in Indonesian institutes, including his own school in Gresik and the National Islamic Institute in Central Java.
