Education and Jurisprudential Work
Mustafa ibn Hamid ibn Hasan ibn Sumayt pursued his traditional and academic Islamic studies in Tarim, graduating from both Ribat Tarim and the Faculty of Sharia in Tarim . Guided by senior scholars who encouraged him to make complex legal texts more accessible, he undertook an abridgment of Ibn Hajar al-Haytami's foundational commentary Tuhfat al-Muhtaj bi Sharh al-Minhaj .
His legal work focused on simplifying intricate and dense passages, condensing lengthy digressions, retaining the relied-upon positions (al-mu'tamad) of the Shafi'i school, and highlighting issues where Ibn Hajar diverged from other contemporary Shafi'i authorities . In addition to this abridgment, he edited classical texts, including Abdullah ibn Umar al-Hadrami's treatise on pilgrimage rites, Manasik al-Hajj wa-l-'Umrah wa-Adab al-Ziyarah al-Nabawiyyah .
Scholarly Reception
Sumayt's jurisprudential condensation received commendation from notable scholars across Yemen. Salim ibn Abd Allah al-Shatiri, the director of Ribat Tarim, praised the abridgment for elucidating difficult expressions and organizing dispersed legal branches . Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Hafiz, dean of Dar al-Mustafa, lauded his effort in facilitating access to Ibn Hajar's intricate legal formulations .
The work was also reviewed and evaluated by Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Ba'awdan, who examined and revised the third quarter of the jurisprudence text in collaboration with Sumayt . Furthermore, Hasan Maqbuli al-Ahdal, head of the Department of Usul al-Fiqh and Hadith at the Faculty of Sharia at Sana'a University, commended the work's precision in preserving the authorized rulings of the school in a concise form .

Mukhtasar Tuhfat al-Muhtaj bi Sharh al-Minhaj is a contemporary Shafi'i legal work that provides a concise condensation of Ibn Hajar al-Haytami's commentary Tuhfat al-Muhtaj bi Sharh al-Minhaj, originally written on al-Nawawi's foundational legal manual Minhaj al-Talibin. The abridgment simplifies Ibn Hajar's intricate text by summarizing lengthy discussions, retaining legal branches while omitting extensive theoretical and grammatical digressions, and presenting standard relied-upon rulings to make the material accessible to intermediate students of jurisprudence.
