Musa al-Basit is a contemporary Islamic scholar and author known for his work Radd al-Tu‘ūn al-Wāridah fī al-Mawsū‘ah al-‘Ibriyyah ‘an al-Islām wa-Rasūlihi (Refutation of the Allegations Made in the Hebrew Encyclopedia Against Islam and Its Messenger) .
Scholarly Focus and Apologetics
Al-Basit focused on examining and refuting portrayals of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and the Prophetic Sunnah in modern Israeli academic and reference literature . In Radd al-Tu‘ūn al-Wāridah fī al-Mawsū‘ah al-‘Ibriyyah, he engaged specifically with the entry on Islam in the fourth volume—as well as volumes twenty-two and twenty-six—of the Hebrew Encyclopedia . He also drew upon pedagogical material compiled for critical study at academic institutions such as the College of Sharia in Baqa al-Gharbiyye and the College of Da‘wah and Islamic Sciences in Umm al-Fahm .
In his critique, al-Basit analyzed the methodologies of contributors to the encyclopedia, such as Jacob Lassner and Samuel Miklos Stern, highlighting their reliance on Orientalist scholars including S. D. Goitein, J. J. Rivlin, Hava Lazarus-Yafeh, and Ignaz Goldziher . He addressed and rebutted claims alleging that Islam originated merely as an offshoot of Judaism, as well as claims regarding the nature of the Prophetic mission and allegations questioning the integrity and infallibility (‘iṣmah) of the prophets .
