Muhammad Yahya Hilu (also vocalized as al-Hilu) is a contemporary scholar of Arabic language and grammar, best known for his applied grammatical and rhetorical commentary on al-Busiri’s celebrated praise poem al-Burda.

Scholarly Approach and Methodology

Hilu structured his educational commentary, al-Burda Sharḥan wa-Iʿrāban wa-Balāghatan li-Ṭullāb al-Maʿāhid wal-Jāmiʿāt (completed in Rabiʿ al-Awwal 1420 AH / June 1999 CE), around a five-step pedagogical framework tailored for university and institute students. For each verse of the ode, his method begins with clarifying obscure vocabulary, followed by explaining the overall meaning of the verse independently, corroborating the meaning with relevant Prophetic traditions where helpful, parsing the grammatical syntax of both single terms and whole clauses (iʿrāb), and identifying rhetorical imagery, including similes (tashbīh), metaphors (istiʿāra), and metonymies (kināya). He acknowledged the significant contributions and revisions of scholar Muhammad Ali Hamdullah, who enhanced the work with scholarly adjustments, nuanced syntactic analyses, and rhetorical insights.
