Muhammad Uthman Ali is a modern scholar and researcher of classical Arabic literature, known for his critical and comparative scholarship on the commentary tradition of Abu Tammam’s poetic anthology Diwan al-Hamasah (The Anthology of Valor).
Academic Career and Research
Ali prepared his doctoral dissertation at Cairo University (Khartoum Branch), structuring it into two parts: a comparative monograph on the commentaries on Abu Tammam's Hamasah through the end of the sixth century AH, and a critical edition and study of Sharh Kitab al-Hamasah by Abu al-Qasim Zayd ibn Ali al-Farisi (d. 467 AH). His comparative study was later published under the title Shuruh Hamasat Abi Tammam: Dirasah Muwazanah fi Manahijiha wa Tatbiqiha (Commentaries on Abu Tammam's Hamasah: A Comparative Study of Their Methodologies and Applications).
Ali conducted an extensive survey of the historical commentaries dedicated to the Hamasah, identifying forty-four distinct commentaries from the classical period through modern times, alongside several anonymous works. This inventory expanded upon the earlier bibliographical listings compiled by Abd al-Salam Harun (who had identified thirty) and Abd Allah Asilan (who had listed thirty-five). In his methodological analysis of early commentaries down to the sixth century AH, Ali classified the technical apparatus of commentators across several interpretive elements, including lexicography, grammatical and morphological analysis, prosody, historical context, textual transmission, and critical appraisal.
