Muhammad Nadim Fadil (d. 1446 AH / 2024–2025 CE) was a contemporary scholar of Arabic linguistics and Quranic studies, best known for his monograph on syntactic and semantic implication in the Quran, al-Tadmin al-Nahwi fi al-Quran al-Karim (Grammatical Implication in the Holy Quran) .

Academic Career and Scholarship

Fadil earned his doctorate from the University of the Holy Quran and Islamic Sciences in Khartoum with a dissertation on grammatical implication (tadmin) in the Quran . Completed in Medina in 1425 AH and published in 1426 AH (2005 CE), the study investigated the theoretical foundations and applied instances of tadmin, analyzing 270 Quranic verses . In the field of classical grammatical editing, he collaborated with Fakhr al-Din Qabawa on the critical edition of al-Jana al-Dani fi Huruf al-Ma'ani (The Plucked Fruit Regarding Meaning-Bearing Particles) by al-Muradi .

Linguistic Views

Fadil focused primarily on the phenomenon of grammatical implication (tadmin) and its role in revealing the eloquence and conciseness (ijaz) of Quranic discourse . In the classical debate between the alternation of prepositions (tanawub al-huruf) and verb implication, he rejected the claim that particles interchange meanings arbitrarily . Instead, he maintained that a verb is instilled with the meaning of another verb requiring the specific preposition that appears, aligning his stance with authorities such as Sibawayh, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, and Ibn al-Arabi . Furthermore, he argued that tadmin operates by regular analogy (qiyasi) rather than being strictly restricted to direct transmission (sama'i), permitting its usage by those with refined discernment in Arabic rhetoric .
