Muhammad Matni is a contemporary Islamic scholar and researcher in Quranic studies, known for his analytical exegetical study titled Surat al-Qasas: Dirasa Tahliliyya (Surat al-Qasas: An Analytical Study) .
Academic Work and Methodology
Matni completed his doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Professor Muhammad Salih Atiyyah . Following his advisor's proposal, he structured the study of Surat al-Qasas into distinct thematic passages subjected to a standardized academic framework: lexicographical analysis of terminology, demonstration of textual coherence (munasaba) with adjoining verses, documentation of Quranic variant readings (qira'at) and their transmission sources, discussion of rhetorical aspects (balagha), exposition of the overarching meaning, and deduction of broader religious and moral principles .
In his analysis, Matni integrated two approaches: reviewing classical exegetical views without deviation where the textual context admitted no further addition, and offering contemporary interpretive readings on thematic and rhetorical subjects . His research examined themes such as the laws governing the rise and collapse of civilizations, the nature of tyranny, the comparative details between the Quranic narrative and the biblical accounts in the Book of Exodus, and the pedagogical and theological lessons drawn from the surah .
