Early life and education
Al-Numani was raised in the household of his father, Sufi Ahmad Husayn, who was a merchant and landowner. During his early childhood, he received his primary instruction in an elementary school (kuttab), learning Quranic recitation, Urdu, Persian, and Arabic. He subsequently studied Arabic grammar, morphology, logic, and rhetoric under Mufti Muhammad Na'im al-Ludhiyanawi and other instructors.
He later enrolled at Dar al-Ulum Deoband to study Quranic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith, and jurisprudence (fiqh). Among his prominent teachers there were Anwar Shah al-Kashmiri, Aziz al-Rahman, and Siraj Ahmad al-Rashidi. He completed his studies and graduated from the seminary in 1345 AH.

Following his graduation, al-Numani taught Islamic sciences in his home region for three years. He was actively engaged in polemical and theological debates against various movements in the Indian subcontinent, including the Arya Samaj, the Ahmadiyya (Qadiyani) movement, the Barelvis, and the Khaksar movement. He also participated in political activism against British colonial rule, including involvement in the Khilafat Movement.
In Lucknow, he founded and directed the monthly journal al-Furqan, which attained broad circulation in religious and scholarly circles. His scholarly output included Ma'arif al-Hadith as well as Di'ayat Mukaththafah didda al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab ("Intensive Propaganda against Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab"), which was first published in installments in al-Furqan.
