Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Mabad (1353–1430 AH / 1934–2009 CE) was an Egyptian Quranic scholar, reciter, and teacher at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, known for pedagogical writings on tajwid and the Quranic sciences.
Early Life and Education
Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Mabad was born on August 8, 1934 CE in the village of Nazlat Tarjam in the Atfih district of the Giza Governorate, south of Helwan in Egypt. He began memorizing the Quran in his early childhood and completed it at the age of eleven. To master Quranic recitation (tajwīd), he traveled to the neighboring village of Sawl, where he studied for approximately a year, reciting successive full completions (khatamāt) according to the transmissions of Hafs, Warsh, and Qalun, receiving a teaching license (ijāzah) before reaching the age of fourteen. Alongside his traditional study, he pursued formal secondary schooling and completed his secondary certificate.
He continued his higher education at the Faculty of Arabic Language at al-Azhar in Egypt. Among his prominent teachers were:
- His father, Ahmad Muhammad Mabad, an Azharite scholar under whom he initially memorized the Quran in the transmission of Hafs from Asim.
- Abd al-Azim Khalil Suwaylim, who instructed him in tajwid and certified him in the transmissions of Hafs from Asim as well as Qalun and Warsh from Nafi via the Shatibiyyah path.
- Abd al-Fattah al-Qadi, whom he accompanied for an extended period, studying religious sciences, Arabic, and Quranic readings (qirāʾāt); al-Qadi also endorsed Mabad's book on tajwid.
Teaching and Scholarly Activities
Mabad established a regular teaching circle at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, situated adjacent to the wicket of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (Khawkhat Abī Bakr). In addition to his mosque circles, he prepared and presented various radio and television programs dedicated to Quranic education.
A substantial circle of students studied under him. Notable among them were Ahmad Muhammad Uthman, who succeeded him in teaching at his designated location in the Prophet's Mosque, Muhammad Abd al-Aziz al-Haddad, Ibrahim Ahmad Atiyyah, Ahmad Radwan, and Muhammad Najib Usaylan.
His instructional handbook on recitation rules, al-Mulakhkhas al-mufīd fī ʿilm al-tajwīd ("The Useful Summary in the Science of Tajwid"), achieved wide circulation across the Muslim world and was translated into Urdu, English, Turkish, Persian, and Russian. He also authored Nafahāt min ʿulūm al-Qurʾān ("Breezes from the Quranic Sciences"), designed in a question-and-answer format with review exercises to facilitate foundational Quranic disciplines for students.
