Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Awaji is a contemporary Islamic scholar and researcher specializing in the Prophetic biography (al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah) and early Islamic historiography.

Scholarly Focus and Methodology

Al-Awaji's research centers on the documentation, transmission, and critical evaluation of early historical reports concerning the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In his study Marwiyyat al-Imam al-Zuhri fi al-Maghazi ("The Transmissions of Imam al-Zuhri Regarding the Military Expeditions"), he collected, arranged, and authenticated the historical narrations attributed to the early Medinan scholar Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri concerning the military campaigns (maghazi) and expeditions (saraya). His methodological approach relied on comparing al-Zuhri's historical accounts against classical hadith collections and early biographical compilations—such as the works of Ibn Ishaq, al-Waqidi, and Ibn Sa'd—to evaluate the reliability of chains of transmission and reconcile historical discrepancies. Through this comparative analysis, he concluded that al-Zuhri's historical reports largely aligned with the broader consensus of early hadith and maghazi authorities, with only a few specific points of divergence, such as the dating of the expedition against Banu al-Nadir and the counts of captives and casualties at the Battle of Badr.

In addition to source-critical studies of early narrations, al-Awaji examined the contemporary application and moral significance of Prophetic history in his treatise Ahammiyat Dirasat al-Sira al-Nabawiyya wal-Inaya biha fi Hayat al-Muslimin ("The Importance of Studying the Prophetic Biography and Attending to It in the Life of Muslims"), addressing the practical integration of the Prophet's guidance into modern religious and social life.
