Muhammad ibn Husayn al-Yamani (d. c. 400 AH / 1010 CE) was an Arab literary scholar and author of the late fourth and early fifth centuries AH. He is best known for his work Mudāhāt Amthāl Kalīla wa-Dimna bi-mā Ashbahahā min Ash‘ār al-‘Arab (Matching the Parables of Kalīla wa-Dimna with Analogous Arabic Poetry).
Literary Contribution
Al-Yamani's primary literary contribution centers on the comparative study of wisdom literature and classical Arabic poetry. In his work Mudāhāt Amthāl Kalīla wa-Dimna, he analyzed the animal fables, moral teachings, aphorisms, and maxims found throughout Kalīla wa-Dimna, methodically pairing each narrative concept and moral reflection with parallel verses and proverbial citations drawn from the classical Arabic poetic canon. Through this comparative approach, he demonstrated the thematic and rhetorical correspondences between the imported wisdom tradition and indigenous Arabic verse.
