Muhammad Husayn al-Dhahabi (d. 1397 AH / 1977 CE) was an Egyptian Azhari scholar of Quranic exegesis and a former Minister of Awqaf and al-Azhar Affairs, known for his work on the history and methodologies of Quranic interpretation .

Life and Career

Known also in full as Muhammad al-Sayyid Husayn al-Dhahabi, he pursued his religious and academic training within the Azhari scholarly tradition . He specialized in Quranic studies and legal research, eventually rising to senior governmental and academic roles, serving as Egypt’s Minister of Awqaf and al-Azhar Affairs . In addition to his focus on Quranic interpretation, he engaged in comparative jurisprudence, producing al-Shari'ah al-Islamiyyah: Dirasah Muqaranah bayna Madhahib Ahl al-Sunnah wa Madhhab al-Ja'fariyyah (Islamic Law: A Comparative Study between Sunni Schools and the Ja'fari School) .

Scholarly Contribution and Reception

Al-Dhahabi was recognized for his research into the historical development and schools of Quranic commentary, examining both printed and manuscript exegetical sources across different intellectual traditions . His primary work, al-Tafsir wa al-Mufassirun (Quranic Exegesis and the Exegetes), surveyed the emergence and categorization of tafsir from the prophetic era through the classical and modern periods, addressing issues such as narrative additions (Isra'iliyyat) and the boundaries between transmitted commentary (tafsir) and reasoned analysis (ta'wil) . In it, he also defended the early Companions against claims by Ignaz Goldziher and Ahmad Amin regarding expansive reliance on Judeo-Christian traditions . Later scholars evaluated his framework; while acknowledging its role in cataloging exegetical trends, critics such as Muhammad Ibrahim al-Sharif observed that some of its assessments leaned toward general judgments rather than exhaustive textual analysis of every discussed commentary . Al-Dhahabi also authored al-Ittijahat al-Munharifah fi Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim (Deviant Trends in the Exegesis of the Holy Quran), which examined unorthodox interpretive approaches and set criteria for evaluating modern and sectarian trends .

Death

Al-Dhahabi was assassinated in the month of Rajab 1397 AH (1977 CE); another recorded report places his death in 1398 AH . Following his death, supplementary portions of his research for al-Tafsir wa al-Mufassirun were recovered from his remaining manuscripts and published by Muhammad al-Biltaji .
