Muhammad Hasan Jabal (d. 1436 AH / 2015 CE) was an Egyptian linguist, scholar of Arabic philology, and professor at al-Azhar University, best known for his lexicographical work al-Mu‘jam al-Ishtiqāqī al-Muʾaṣṣal li-Alfāẓ al-Qurʾān al-Karīm (The Root-Derived Etymological Dictionary of Quranic Vocabulary).
Academic Career and Contributions
Muhammad Hasan Hasan Jabal specialized in Arabic linguistic origins and philology (uṣūl al-lughah). He served as a professor of philology at al-Azhar University and held the post of dean at the Faculty of Arabic Language in Mansoura. Later in his career, he served as a part-time professor at the Faculty of the Holy Quran.
Jabal's scholarly research centered on Arabic lexicography, semantic theory, and Quranic vocabulary. In his four-volume dictionary, al-Mu‘jam al-Ishtiqāqī al-Muʾaṣṣal li-Alfāẓ al-Qurʾān al-Karīm, he examined the semantic roots of Quranic terms by identifying the core meaning (al-ma‘nā al-miḥwarī) of each linguistic root and linking phonetic composition to semantic value. His broader linguistic contributions also addressed the methodology and critique of traditional Arabic dictionaries in al-Istidrāk ‘alā al-Ma‘ājim al-‘Arabiyyah (Rectifications on Arabic Dictionaries), as well as linguistic evidential authority in al-Iḥtijāj bi-al-Shi‘r fī al-Lughah (The Evidentiary Use of Poetry in Language).
