Muhammad Faruq al-Zayn (also referred to as Muhammad Faruq Faris al-Zayn) is a contemporary scholar and writer known for his multi-volume Quranic exegesis Bayan al-Nazm fi al-Quran al-Karim (Clarification of Structural Coherence in the Noble Quran) .
Exegetical Method and Thought
Al-Zayn's scholarship centers on the structural arrangement (nazm) and internal unity of the Quran. In Bayan al-Nazm fi al-Quran al-Karim, he approached the Quran as a continuous, sequentially ordered structure (manzuma mutasalsila) from beginning to end, applying this premise both to the succession of verses within individual surahs and to the overarching sequence of surahs from Surat al-Fatihah to Surat al-Nas .
Regarding the arrangement of the text, al-Zayn held that the order of surahs and verses is divinely determined (tawqifi) and intrinsically binding rather than conditioned on human rationalization (ghayr mu'allal). Consequently, he maintained that commentators need not construct artificial thematic links across abrupt topical transitions within a surah, a tendency he criticized in earlier works such as Nazm al-Durar by Burhan al-Din al-Biqa'i . He also emphasized grammatical precision when tracking structural transitions, noting the necessity of distinguishing between conjunctive particles (waw al-'atf) and resumptive particles (waw al-isti'naf) that signal the beginning of new passages .
Al-Zayn published Bayan al-Nazm fi al-Quran al-Karim in four sequential quarters. He began with the fourth quarter, covering Surah Ghafir through Surat al-Nas, which was completed in Shawwal 1423 AH (December 2002 CE) . The first quarter, spanning Surat al-Fatihah through Surat al-An'am, was published in al-Muharram 1425 AH (February 2004 CE) , while the second quarter (Surat al-A'raf to Surat al-Kahf) and the third quarter (Surat Maryam to Surat al-Zumar) were both issued in Jumada al-Ula 1425 AH (July 2004 CE) .
Beyond Quranic studies, al-Zayn addressed comparative religion and modern intellectual encounters, producing al-Masihiyya wa-l-Islam wa-l-Istishraq (Christianity, Islam, and Orientalism) .
