Muhammad bin Mahfuz al-Shinqiti (fl. 15th century AH / 21st century CE) is a contemporary scholar and teacher known for his didactic versification of Abd al-Hamid Ibn Badis's foundational legal treatise in his poem Jawahir al-Durar fi Nazm Mabadi Usul Ibn Badis al-Abar.
Life and Teaching
Muhammad bin Mahfuz bin al-Mukhtar Fal al-Shinqiti became known among students by the designation "Shaykh al-Suq" due to his long-standing teaching at that ribat. He dedicated himself to instructional teaching, scholarly benefit, and religious devotion. Among his students was al-Mukhtar bin al-Arabi Mu'min, who prepared his didactic work for publication.
Scholarly Contribution
At the request of his students seeking an accessible text in the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) for memorization and study, al-Shinqiti versified Mabadi' al-Usul by Abd al-Hamid Ibn Badis, the head of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema, in his didactic poem Jawahir al-Durar fi Nazm Mabadi Usul Ibn Badis al-Abar. In rendering the prose work into meter, he retained the original text's chapter divisions and structural ordering while adhering as closely as possible to its literal phrasing, occasionally adjusting word order or adding words to complete the verse. The poem comprises 375 verses and was completed on a Friday afternoon in 1424 AH (c. 2003–2004 CE), before being published in 1426 AH (2005 CE).
