Muhammad bin Ali bin Hizam al-Badani is a contemporary Yemeni scholar of hadith and Islamic jurisprudence, known for his analytical studies on legal traditions, notably Fath al-Allam fi Dirasat Ahadith Bulugh al-Maram (The Grant of the All-Knowing in Studying the Hadiths of Bulugh al-Maram) .
Lineage and Education
His full name is Abu Abd Allah Muhammad bin Ali bin Hizam al-Fadli al-Badani . He pursued his Islamic religious studies in Yemen, receiving instruction from prominent scholars including Muqbil bin Hadi al-Wadi'i and Yahya ibn Ali al-Hajuri . He also acknowledged the encouragement and guidance of Abu Khalid Surur bin Ahmad bin Ma'id al-Wadi'i during his pursuit of Islamic knowledge .
Scholarly Activity and Methodology
Al-Badani engaged in teaching and writing at the traditional seminary of Dar al-Hadith in Dammaj, as well as through Dar al-Hadith al-Salafiyyah in Ibb . During his tenure teaching students at Dammaj, he compiled his extensive work Fath al-Allam fi Dirasat Ahadith Bulugh al-Maram, which serves as an analytical study of the legal traditions in Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Bulugh al-Maram by evaluating chain narrations and extracting jurisprudence from primary sources .
His legal methodology emphasizes grounding jurisprudential deductions directly in hadith criticism, referencing classical books of takhrij and hidden transmission defects (‘ilal) . In other specialized topics, such as in Ithaf al-Anam bi-Ahkam wa-Masa'il al-Siyam (Bestowing on Mankind the Rulings and Issues of Fasting), he arranged discussions following the classical jurists' manner of detailing legal differences and subsidiary rulings concerning fasting, spiritual retreat (i‘tikaf), alms tax of breaking the fast (zakat al-fitr), and the two Eid prayers .
