Muhammad Ba Karim Muhammad Ba Abdullah is a contemporary scholar and researcher in Islamic theology, best known for his study on credal moderation, Wasatiyyat Ahl al-Sunna bayn al-Firaq ("The Moderation of Ahl al-Sunna Among the Sects") .

Academic and Editorial Work

Ba Abdullah completed a master's thesis in 1403–1404 AH editing and analyzing Abu Nasr al-Sijzi's theological treatise al-Radd 'ala man Ankara al-Harf wa-l-Sawt ("Refutation of Whoever Denies the Letter and Sound"), which was subsequently published by the Islamic University of Madinah . He also edited al-Dhahabi's work al-Tamassuk bi-l-Sunan wa-l-Tahdhir min al-Bida' ("Adherence to the Sunnah and Warning Against Innovations"), which was published in the journal of the Islamic University of Madinah .

Scholarly Contributions and Positions

In his theological research, Ba Abdullah focuses on the definition of orthodoxy and the middle path of Ahl al-Sunna. In his monograph Wasatiyyat Ahl al-Sunna bayn al-Firaq, he defines moderation (wasat) linguistically as encompassing justice, virtue, goodness, and balance between opposing extremes . He argues that early Muslim authorities used the term Sunnah primarily to designate adherence to the Quran and the Prophetic model in matters of creed .

Ba Abdullah maintains that the designation Ahl al-Sunna is an early term originating in the era of the Companions, citing statements by Abdullah ibn Abbas, and rejects the claim that the term was first applied to the Ash'aris . He critiques the Ash'ari school's claim to exclusively represent Ahl al-Sunna, arguing that their reliance on rationalism over textual transmission and their setting aside of certain hadith texts preclude this claim . His work systematically contrasts the positions of Ahl al-Sunna with various groups—such as the Khawarij, Shia, Murji'ah, Jahmiyyah, and Mu'tazilah—across central theological doctrines, including the Divine names and attributes and the status of the Prophets .
