Muhammad al-Thani ibn Umar Musa is a contemporary West African Islamic scholar and researcher known for his studies on the transmission and translation of Hadith literature into the Hausa language.
Scholarly Contributions
Musa's scholarship focuses on the history and methodology of disseminating Prophetic traditions across Hausa-speaking communities in West Africa. In his treatise al-Ihtimam bi al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah bi Lughat al-Hawsa ("Attention to the Prophetic Sunnah in the Hausa Language"), he documented the oral instruction of Hadith in traditional teaching circles (halaqat) and public lectures, as well as institutional translation projects undertaken by academic bodies, such as the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Bayero University Kano in Nigeria. In that work, he evaluated both institutional and individual translation initiatives—including early translations of al-Nawawi's al-Arba'un al-Nawawiyyah—and called for specialized academic committees to transcribe, edit, and publish vernacular Hadith commentaries.
In 1414 AH (c. 1993–1994 CE), Musa completed a translation of Akhlaq al-'Ulama' ("The Morals of the Scholars") by Abu Bakr al-Ajurri (d. 360 AH) into Hausa, appending brief annotations evaluating the authenticity of the reported narrations.
