Muhammad ibn Hamad al-Suwayyani (kunya Abu ʿUmar) is a contemporary Saudi scholar and educator from Buraydah, known for his studies on the Prophetic biography (al-Sira al-Nabawiyya) and the authentication of its narrations.

Background and Career

Al-Suwayyani belongs to the al-Suwayyani family of Buraydah in al-Qasim, a lineage tracing back to Salih ibn Rashid al-Saqʿabi; his father, Hamad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Hamad (d. 1380 AH), was the first in the family to carry the surname. Al-Suwayyani graduated from the College of Sharia and pursued a career in teaching. Among the teachers and academic mentors he studied under and acknowledged in his research are ʿAdil ibn ʿAli al-Thadi, Ahmad ibn ʿUthman al-Mazyad, and ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Talhah.

Scholarly Contributions

Al-Suwayyani focused his scholarly efforts on the historical and hadith criticism of the Prophetic biography. His major early work was a critical textual study of Sira reports titled al-Qasimiyya: Dirasa Naqdiyya li-Nusus al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, the first volume of which was published in 1409 AH.

His most prominent project is al-Sira al-Nabawiyya Kama Jaʾat fi al-Ahadith al-Sahiha (The Prophetic Biography as Narrated in Authentic Hadiths), in which he aimed to reconstruct the life of the Prophet Muhammad strictly through sound hadiths while connecting the events in an engaging, simplified narrative style accessible to general readers. Later, he also published al-Sahih min Ahadith al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, documenting and assessing the authentic reports related to the Prophetic era.
