Muhammad al-Masnai, fully Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Masnai al-Ansi, is a contemporary Yemeni hadith researcher known for his multi-volume biographical compilation Misbah al-Arib fi Taqrib al-Ruwat alladhina laysa fi Taqrib al-Tahdhib .

Life and Scholarly Activities

In addition to the nisba al-Ansi, he is also referred to with the attribution al-Zubaydi . His research and educational activity centered around traditional hadith learning centers in Yemen, notably Dar al-Hadith in Dammaj, where he finished the initial compilation of his biographical reference work in Dhu al-Qi'dah 1420 AH (2000 CE) . He was also active at Dar al-Hadith in Ma'bar, where he completed a supplementary volume in 1427 AH (2006 CE) .

His scholarship focused on hadith transmitter criticism and legal compendia. He compiled Fatawa al-Mar'ah al-Muslimah ("Rulings for the Muslim Woman"), a collection of legal opinions by Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadi'i published in 1412 AH .

Scholarly Reception

Al-Masnai received recognition from contemporary Yemeni scholars for his biographical reference dictionary Misbah al-Arib fi Taqrib al-Ruwat alladhina laysa fi Taqrib al-Tahdhib ("The Lamp of the Sagacious in Presenting Narrators Not Found in Taqrib al-Tahdhib"), which was designed to supplement Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's biographical index Taqrib al-Tahdhib .

In Rajab 1424 AH, Muhammad al-Imam praised the work at Dar al-Hadith in Ma'bar, observing that al-Masnai had gathered entries for more than thirty thousand narrators while transmitting the evaluations of earlier hadith critics concerning transmitter evaluation and disparagement (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) . Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Wassabi also reviewed and commended the compendium in Safar 1425 AH, describing it as a beneficial service to students of hadith and biographical literature . Al-Masnai later supplemented the main text with Takmilat Misbah al-Arib, which incorporated agnomens (kuna), titles (alqab), and omitted narrators .
