Muhammad al-Hasan al-Dadu al-Shinqiti is a Mauritanian Islamic scholar, jurist, and educator who serves as the director of the Center for Training Scholars in Nouakchott .

Upbringing and Education

Al-Dadu began his education in early childhood under the tutelage of his mother and grandmother, memorizing the Quran before reaching the age of eight . Around that time, he also began studying Arabic grammar and foundational religious sciences . At the age of ten, he joined his maternal grandfather, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wudud al-Hashimi, and studied closely under his direction for approximately eleven years, receiving the majority of his early learning from him until his grandfather's death . He subsequently continued his studies under his parents, grandmother, and maternal uncles, including Muhammad Yahya and Muhammad Fali, graduating from the traditional desert mahdara of the Al Addud family in Umm al-Qura in the Trarza region of Mauritania .

He later enrolled in the Saudi Institute in Nouakchott, an affiliated branch of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University . The institute sent him on scholarship to Riyadh to pursue higher studies at the university, where he defended his master's thesis before an examination committee that included Salih al-Luhaydan and Dr. Abd al-Rahman al-Atram .

Career, Imprisonment, and Standing

Al-Dadu became an active preacher and educator, traveling widely to teach Muslim communities in Africa and other regions . In Mauritania, he assumed the directorship of the Center for Training Scholars (Markaz Takwin al-Ulama) in Nouakchott . During the presidency of Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, al-Dadu was arrested and detained in the Central Prison alongside other prominent figures of the country's Islamic movement . He was released following the military coup that ousted Ould Taya, delivering an address to supporters upon his release in which he expressed hope for political reform and civil liberties .

In contemporary scholarly discussions, al-Dadu has been commended by numerous Sunni scholars for his mastery of traditional texts, although he has also faced criticism regarding theological stances . Defenses published by legal authorities noted that his public teachings affirm Sunni orthodoxy through lectures on God's names and attributes as well as commentaries on works such as Kitab al-Tawhid and the creedal poetry of Shaykh Muhammad Salim .
