Muhammad al-Bari (d. after 645 AH / 1247 CE) was an Andalusian-Maghrebi genealogist and author, best known for his genealogical work al-Jawhara fi Nasab al-Nabi wa Ashabihi al-Ashara.

Identity and Dates

His full name was Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Abd Allah ibn Musa al-Ansari al-Tilimsani al-Andalusi, and he was known as al-Bari (also vocalized as al-Burri). He lived during the seventh century AH and finished copying his principal book in his own hand in 645 AH (1247 CE). Sources date his death either to after 645 AH or to around 680 AH (c. 1281 CE).

Scholarly Contribution and Reception

Al-Bari is classified among Islamic genealogists on account of his treatise al-Jawhara fi Nasab al-Nabi wa Ashabihi al-Ashara (The Jewel on the Lineage of the Prophet and His Ten Companions), which treats the ancestral lineage of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the genealogical backgrounds of the ten companions promised Paradise.

In Kashf al-Zunun, Haji Khalifa attributed al-Jawhara to Kamal al-Din al-Anbari (d. 577 AH / 1181 CE), an attribution noted by subsequent biographical researchers to be an error.
