Life and Academic Career
Muhammad Ajjaj al-Khatib al-Hasani al-Dimashqi traced his lineage to Damascus, where he pursued his scholarly path. He joined the faculty of Damascus University, where he served as a professor of Hadith and its sciences in the Faculty of Sharia and chaired the Department of Quranic Sciences and Sunna. Alongside his work in Syria, he was engaged in academic and scholarly activities abroad, including in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. He died in 1443 AH (2021 CE).
Scholarly Contribution and Standing
Al-Khatib was recognized for his systematic modern scholarship in defending the historical transmission of the prophetic Sunna and structuring Hadith terminology for academic curricula. His study al-Sunna qabl al-Tadwin, which was introduced by the Islamic jurisprudence scholar Ali Hasab Allah of Cairo University, was considered one of the earliest pioneering modern monographs dedicated to documenting the early preservation, recording, and transmission of the Sunna before its formal compilation.
In Abu Hurayra Rawiyat al-Islam (Abu Hurayra, the Transmitter of Islam), he mounted a detailed defense of the Companion Abu Hurayra, answering contemporary polemics and criticisms directed against his trustworthiness and narrations. His pedagogical textbook Usul al-Hadith: Ulumuhu wa-Mustalahuh (Principles of Hadith: Its Sciences and Terminology) was adopted across universities and cited by contemporary scholars as a standard reference on Hadith terminology and history.
