Muhammad Ahmad Durniqa is a modern scholar and researcher based in Tripoli, Lebanon, known for his historical and biographical studies on Islamic Sufism, modern reform, and prophetic eulogy, notably Mu‘jam A‘lam Shu‘ara’ al-Madh al-Nabawi .
Scholarly Focus and Research
Durniqa dedicated the greater part of his academic research to Islamic Sufism and the elucidation of prophetic traditions and heritage . In the field of Sufi history, he examined the heritage and lineage of spiritual orders, including his monograph Al-Tariqah al-Shadhiliyyah wa-A‘lamuha ("The Shadhili Order and Its Prominent Figures") . In addition to Sufism, he investigated modern Islamic reformist movements and figures, writing Muhammad Rashid Rida: Islahatuhu al-Ijtima‘iyyah wa-l-Diniyyah ("Muhammad Rashid Rida: His Social and Religious Reforms"), which analyzes Muhammad Rashid Rida's critique of religious innovations, civic stagnation, and scholarly complacency .
Prophetic Panegyric and Reception
Durniqa's biographical dictionary Mu‘jam A‘lam Shu‘ara’ al-Madh al-Nabawi ("Dictionary of Eminent Poets of Prophetic Panegyric") compiles biographical sketches and poetic selections across fourteen centuries of Islamic history, spanning from early Islamic figures such as Ka‘b ibn Zuhayr to modern poets such as Ahmad Shawqi . The compilation covers around five hundred poets, scholars, writers, and fighters who composed poetry in praise of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . Durniqa completed the work in Tripoli in Rabi‘ al-Awwal 1414 AH (August 1993 CE) with the collaboration of Dr. Yasin al-Ayyubi, who vocalized the verses and authored its introduction .
In reviewing the dictionary, al-Ayyubi commended Durniqa's extensive documentation and source citations, while observing an uneven balance between concise excerpts for some poets and extensive citations for others, attributing this to Durniqa's reliance on biographical dictionaries oriented toward personalities rather than complete poetic corpora .
