Muhammad Abd al-Munim al-Qayii (d. 1411 AH / 1990–1991 CE) was an Egyptian scholar of Quranic sciences and exegesis who served as a professor and head of the Department of Tafsir at the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
Career and Teaching
Al-Qayii pursued an academic and instructional career centered at al-Azhar University, where he chaired the Department of Quranic Exegesis (tafsir) within the Faculty of Usul al-Din. Students attended his lectures to study legal theory (usul), Quranic exegesis, the sciences of the Quran (ulum al-Quran), and Arabic grammar.
He maintained close relationships with his students and supervised advanced academic research, including the Master's thesis of Muhammad Salim Abu Asi on the exegesis of conditional verses in the Quran (Tafsir Ayat al-Shart fi al-Quran al-Karim).
Scholarly Approach and Death
In his methodological writings on Quranic studies, particularly al-Aslan fi Ulum al-Quran (The Two Foundations in the Sciences of the Quran)—which he completed revising on 28 Dhu al-Hijjah 1404 AH / 23 September 1984 CE—al-Qayii framed the disciplines of Quranic scholarship as an essential methodological introduction to exegesis, analogous to the relationship between legal theory (usul al-fiqh) and jurisprudence (fiqh). He organized these disciplines under two primary foundations: one predominantly rooted in religious knowledge and the second rooted in the Arabic language. He also authored Nadrat al-Quran ila al-Jarimah wa-l-Uqubah (The Quranic Perspective on Crime and Punishment), addressing penal concepts in Islamic scripture.
Following the academic defense of his student Muhammad Salim Abu Asi's Master's thesis, al-Qayii was moved to tears of joy and farewell, and he died a few days later in 1411 AH.
