Muhammad Abd al-Aziz al-Najjar (d. c. 1397 AH / 1977 CE) was an Egyptian scholar of Arabic grammar, best known for his multi-volume grammatical commentary Diya al-Salik ila Awdah al-Masalik (The Traveler's Light to the Clearest of Paths) .
Grammatical Scholarship and Reception
Al-Najjar authored two levels of commentary on Awdah al-Masalik ila Alfiyyat Ibn Malik by Ibn Hisham al-Ansari—itself an exposition of Ibn Malik's foundational versified compendium—directing one commentary toward beginners and another toward university and institute students . The more comprehensive commentary, bearing the full title Diya al-Salik ila Awdah al-Masalik wa-Huwa Safwat al-Kalam 'ala Tawdih Ibn Hisham, was published in four volumes in Cairo .
Scholars have characterized his work by its close engagement with the base text, comprehensive annotations, and focused analysis of sentence structures and grammatical particularities . His commentary has been evaluated as more detailed in its treatment of structural nuances and less digressive than other modern glosses on the text, although later researchers observed that he did not cite the specific references and sources from which his annotations drew .

Diya al-Salik ila Awdah al-Masalik (The Traveler's Light to the Clearest of Paths) is a four-volume modern commentary on Arabic grammar and morphology. It provides an extensive gloss and analytical explanation of Ibn Hisham al-Ansari's Awdah al-Masalik ila Alfiyyat Ibn Malik, which is itself a grammatical exposition of Ibn Malik's poetic compendium, the Alfiyya.
