Muhammad Abd al-Aziz al-Khuli (1310–1349 AH / 1892–1931 CE) was an Egyptian Islamic scholar, jurist, hadith specialist, exegete, and preacher best known for his treatises on hadith history and ethics, including al-Adab al-Nabawi (Prophetic Etiquette) .

Life and Education

Muhammad Abd al-Aziz ibn Ali al-Shadhili al-Khuli was born in the village of al-Hamul in the Menoufia Governorate of Egypt . He pursued higher religious and legal studies in Cairo, where he enrolled in Madrasat al-Qada' al-Shar'i (the School of Sharia Judiciary) . During his final year of study at the school, he completed a foundational study on the historiography and development of hadith literature, which he finalized on Friday night, 3 Jumada al-Akhirah 1339 AH (11 February 1921 CE) . He subsequently graduated from the institution and remained active in scholarship and religious guidance in Cairo until his death there in 1349 AH (1931 CE) .

Scholarly Contributions and Reception

Al-Khuli was active across Islamic jurisprudence, exegesis, hadith methodology, and social reform . His treatise Miftah al-Sunnah aw Tarikh Funun al-Hadith (The Key to the Sunnah, or the History of Hadith Disciplines) traced the stages of hadith transmission and compilation from the era of oral transmission through thematic and biographical categorizations, while advocating direct engagement with foundational texts rather than strict imitation of secondary legal rulings . The work was published serially in Majallat al-Manar, whose editor, Muhammad Rashid Rida, commended al-Khuli's scholarly initiative, praying for his reward among the supporters of the prophetic Sunnah and expressing agreement with his calls to establish dedicated societies and publication projects to revive hadith scholarship . In addition to hadith history, al-Khuli contributed to the practical reform of Islamic sermonizing through his work Islah al-Wa'z al-Dini (The Reform of Religious Preaching) .
