Muhammad Abd al-Aziz Ahmad al-Ali is an Islamic scholar and author known for his creedal study Ahwal al-Muhtadar (The States of the Dying Person) .
Scholarly Work
Al-Ali wrote Ahwal al-Muhtadar, which was published in Majallat al-Jami'ah al-Islamiyyah, to examine the circumstances, experiences, and tribulations of an individual at the time of death according to the Quran and the Sunnah, aligning with the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jama'ah . He composed the study after noting an absence of dedicated monographs investigating the subject through rigorous source verification, observing that discussions of the dying were otherwise scattered across general literature on the afterlife and often intermixed with unverified reports transmitted by storytellers and preachers .
The treatise consists of an introduction on the subject's significance, a preliminary section defining the terms death (al-mawt), decease (al-wafah), and the onset of dying (al-ihtidar), and ten thematic chapters . In the work, al-Ali defines al-ihtidar as the descent and presence of death upon a servant, examines the scriptural attribution of taking souls to God, the Angel of Death, and assisting angels, and discusses the definitions, textual evidence, and scholarly views concerning the agonies (sakarat) and stupor (ghamarat) of death .
