Abu al-Tayyib Mawlud al-Sariri is a contemporary scholar and specialist in Islamic jurisprudence and legal theory (usul al-fiqh), known for his analytical writings on classical legal treatises and methodologies.
Scholarly Contributions
Al-Sariri authored Sharh Nayl al-Muna fi Nazm al-Muwafaqat lil-Shatibi, an extensive commentary on legal theory that expounds Nayl al-Muna min al-Muwafaqat, a didactic poem composed by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Asim al-Gharnati to versify Abu Ishaq al-Shatibi's treatise al-Muwafaqat. In examining the poem's attribution, al-Sariri engaged with doubts raised by scholars regarding whether Ibn Asim had authored it; he demonstrated its authentic attribution to Ibn Asim by analyzing strong structural parallels and verbatim overlaps between Nayl al-Muna and Ibn Asim's other didactic poem on legal theory, Murtaqa al-Wusul ila 'Ilm al-Usul.
In addition to his work on Maliki jurisprudence and legal theory, al-Sariri examined the methodology of independent jurists in Masadir al-Tashri' wa-Turuq Istithmariha 'inda al-Imam al-Faqih al-Mujtahid 'Ali ibn Ahmad (Ibn Hazm al-Zahiri), a treatise detailing the sources of legislation and modes of textual derivation according to Ibn Hazm.
