Maryam Muhammad Salih al-Zhafiri is a contemporary Islamic legal scholar known for her reference work on the juristic terminology across the Sunni schools of law, Mustalahat al-Madhahib al-Fiqhiyya wa Asrar al-Fiqh al-Marmuz .
Academic Work and Research
Following the completion of two years of diploma coursework, al-Zhafiri sought a master's thesis topic requiring conciseness and precision rather than rhetorical expansion . Encouraged by consultations with her professors and inspired by a recommendation from the Islamic Fiqh Academy in Jeddah calling for the compilation of a dictionary of juristic terminology, she undertook research into the nomenclature of the legal schools .
Her resulting thesis, titled Mustalahat al-Madhahib al-Fiqhiyya wa Asrar al-Fiqh al-Marmuz fi al-A'lam wa al-Kutub wa al-Ara' wa al-Tarjihat ("Terminology of the Juristic Schools and Secrets of Coded Jurisprudence in Regard to Figures, Books, Opinions, and Legal Preferences"), became the first master's thesis to be defended and approved at the College of Islamic and Arabic Studies in Dubai . The study serves as a compendium clarifying specialized nomenclature, scholar titles, book designations, and symbolic letter abbreviations across the schools of jurisprudence, and was published in Beirut by Dar Ibn Hazm in 1422 AH (2002 CE) .
