Majid Irsan al-Kilani (d. 1437 AH / 2015–2016 CE) was an Islamic scholar and theorist specializing in Islamic educational thought and civilizational reform.
Educational Thought and Theory
Al-Kilani's educational theory focused on constructing pedagogical frameworks rooted in Islamic ontology and axiology. In his analysis of Islamic education, he examined the relationship of the human being to the Creator, the universe, life, the afterlife, and human society . In Falsafat al-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyyah (The Philosophy of Islamic Education), he defined values as evaluative standards and benchmarks through which ideas, persons, physical objects, actions, and social situations are judged as virtuous, base, or situated between the two .
In Ahdaf al-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyyah (The Objectives of Islamic Education), al-Kilani addressed the crisis of direction in modern education and framed the definition of pedagogical objectives as an essential necessity . He categorized educational objectives into two interdependent domains: ultimate or terminal goals (al-ahdaf al-aghrad), which embody the final ends sought across individual, social, and global spheres, and instrumental goals (al-ahdaf al-wasa'il), which provide the practical tools and methods required to realize those ends .
Civilizational and Social Analysis
Al-Kilani also wrote on the social dynamics and civilizational trajectory of the Muslim community. In Ikhraj al-Ummah al-Muslimah wa-Awamil Sihhatiha wa-Maradiha (The Bringing Forth of the Muslim Ummah and the Factors of Its Health and Illness), published as part of the Kitab al-Ummah series, he delineated the constitutive elements of the Muslim community, identifying them as believing individuals, migration (Hijrah), struggle (Jihad), the message, sheltering, support, and collective guardianship (Wilayah) .
