Mahmud bin Yusuf Fajjal (d. 1437 AH / 2015–2016 CE) was a modern scholar and professor of Arabic linguistics and grammar, known for his research on Arabic syntactic theory and textual heritage .
Academic Background and Scholarship
Fajjal completed his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Arabic Language at al-Azhar University in Cairo, where he prepared a study on the grammarian al-Zanjani along with a critical edition of the grammar section of al-Zanjani's commentary al-Kafi fi Sharh al-Hadi .
His scholarship concentrated on Arabic grammar and the principles of linguistic evidence (usul al-nahw), with a particular focus on the debate surrounding the evidential use of hadith in Arabic grammatical reasoning. In his treatise al-Hadith al-Nabawi fi al-Nahw al-Arabi (Prophetic Hadith in Arabic Grammar), he examined the stance of early grammarians, asserting that the absence of hadith citations in the works of certain early authorities did not indicate that they disallowed using hadith as evidence, but rather reflected their lack of specialization and full immersion in the demanding discipline of hadith transmission and critical assessment . In addition to his grammatical studies, he wrote on Quranic guidance, including al-Quran al-Karim Manhaj Mutakamil (The Noble Quran: An Integrated Methodology) .
