Mahmas al-Jalaud (full name Mahmas ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Jalʿūd) is a contemporary Islamic author and researcher, best known for his extensive doctrinal study al-Muwālāh wa-al-Muʿādāh fī al-Sharīʿah al-Islāmiyyah (Loyalty and Enmity in Islamic Law).
Scholarship
Al-Jalaud's primary scholarship centers on Islamic creed (ʿaqīdah), particularly the doctrine of allegiance and disavowal (al-walāʾ wa-al-barāʾ). In al-Muwālāh wa-al-Muʿādāh fī al-Sharīʿah al-Islāmiyyah, published in two volumes in 1407 AH / 1987 CE, he examined the theological definitions, scriptural bases in the Quran and the Sunnah, and the positions of early scholars regarding affection and enmity for the sake of God as manifested in intention, word, and deed. The work also investigates the factors leading to the weakening of allegiance and disavowal, including ignorance, theological compromises, claims of duress, and worldly interests.
Reception
Al-Jalaud's treatise has been widely utilized and cited in contemporary Islamic literature addressing doctrinal fundamentals and relations with non-Muslims. In a review published in the periodical Majallat al-Bayan, the author was commended for his rigorous research and the significant effort dedicated to the subject, while the review highlighted critical points concerning the necessity of clearly distinguishing between prohibited allegiance to disbelievers and permissible benevolence and fairness (al-birr wa-al-iqsāṭ) toward non-combatants.
