A. Cressy Morrison (d. 1370 AH / 1951 CE) was an American scientist and scientific administrator, best known for his work Man Does Not Stand Alone, which was translated into Arabic under the title al-Ilm Yadu lil-Iman ("Science Calls to Faith") .

Scientific Career and Affiliations

Morrison held several prominent leadership roles in American and international scientific organizations. He served as the president of the New York Academy of Sciences and the president of the American Institute of the City of New York . He was also a member of the executive board of the United States National Research Council, a fellow of the American Museum of Natural History, and a life member of the Royal Institution of Great Britain .

Views and Reception

Morrison authored Man Does Not Stand Alone as a rebuttal to Julian Huxley's work Man Stands Alone, aiming to demonstrate that modern natural sciences provide compelling evidence for the existence of an intentional Creator and Designer of the universe rather than supporting materialistic atheism . Drawing on fields such as biology, chemistry, and astronomy, he argued that the intricate complexity and order of natural processes—such as human digestion and the cellular mechanics of life—preclude chance origins . He contended that human moral development, civic duty, virtue, and innate prayerful impulses are rooted in faith in God, warning that civilization would succumb to chaos without faith .

Morrison's treatise gained widespread attention in the Arab world following its translation into Arabic by the Egyptian economist Mahmoud Saleh al-Falaki, with introductory forewords by Ahmad Hasan al-Baquri and Ahmad Zaki . The Arabic translation interspersed relevant Quranic verses with Morrison's arguments, and the work became frequently cited by modern Muslim authors and scholars writing on theology, scientific signs, and contemporary apologetics .
