Khalil Ahmad al-Saharanfuri (1269–1346 AH / 1852–1927 CE) was an Indian Hanafi jurist and hadith scholar, best known for his multivolume commentary on Sunan Abi Dawud, Badhl al-Majhud fi Hall Sunan Abi Dawud .
Origin and Early Life
Khalil Ahmad ibn Majid Ali ibn Ahmad Ali ibn Qutb Ali ibn Ghulam Muhammad al-Ansari al-Anbaythawi was born in late Safar 1269 AH in the village of Nanauta, in the district of Saharanpur, into an Ansari family tracing descent to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari . He was raised in the nearby town of Ambetha . His maternal lineage descended from the scholar Mamluk Ali al-Nanautawi, and his paternal lineage converged with that of Rashid Ahmad al-Gangohi at the tenth ancestor .
Education and Spiritual Training
Al-Saharanfuri received his education under his maternal uncle Muhammad Ya'qub al-Nanautawi, as well as Muhammad Mazhar al-Nanautawi and other scholars at Dar al-Ulum Deoband and Mazahir Ulum in Saharanpur . He also studied Arabic literary arts under Fayd al-Hasan al-Saharanfuri in Lahore, completing his formal course of study in 1288 AH .
After completing his studies, he pledged spiritual allegiance to Rashid Ahmad al-Gangohi . During his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1297 AH, he met the Sufi master Imdadullah al-Muhajir al-Makki, who received him hospitably and granted him authorization in the spiritual paths . Upon his return to India, al-Gangohi also granted him authorization, and al-Saharanfuri became one of his closest disciples and senior spiritual deputies .
Teaching Career and Students
Al-Saharanfuri began his career as an assistant instructor at Mazahir Ulum . He subsequently taught in Bhopal, Sikandarabad, Bahawalpur, and Bareilly before being appointed as a professor at Dar al-Ulum Deoband in 1308 AH, where he taught for six years . In 1314 AH, he transferred to Mazahir Ulum in Saharanpur as head of instruction, a post he occupied for over thirty years . He assumed the directorship of the seminary in 1325 AH, overseeing a period of substantial growth that elevated its standing across India .
Among his prominent students was Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhlawi, who accompanied him, transcribed his dictations, and prepared a summary of his hadith commentary . Another notable student was Jamil Ahmad al-Thanawi, who read Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Nasa'i, and the Muwatta Malik under him and received general authorization to transmit hadith .
Scholarly Contributions
Al-Saharanfuri's scholarly efforts centered on hadith instruction and jurisprudential defence of the Hanafi school. In creed, he authored al-Muhannad ala al-Mufannad to articulate and defend the doctrinal positions of the Deobandi school . His primary intellectual legacy remains Badhl al-Majhud fi Hall Sunan Abi Dawud, an extensive commentary addressing textual variants, legal deduction, narrator criticism, and Hanafi proofs, which he completed during his final residence in the Hijaz .
Migration to Medina and Death
In Shawwal 1344 AH, al-Saharanfuri departed India for the Hijaz with the intention of permanent residence in Medina . While residing there, his home was adjacent to that of the chief judge Abdullah ibn Bulayhid, with whom he held frequent discussions on religious and theological questions .
Al-Saharanfuri died in Medina in 1346 AH (1927 CE) and was buried in the cemetery of al-Baqi .
