Academic Career and Research

Afif completed his doctoral dissertation at the Islamic University of Madinah during the academic year 1438–1439 AH. His research focused on reconstructing and analyzing the juristic choices (ikhtiyārāt) of the fifth-century Shafi'i jurist Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Dawud al-Saydilani.

In this study, titled al-Ikhtiyarat al-Fiqhiyya li-Muhammad ibn Dawud al-Saydilani ("The Juristic Preferences of Muhammad ibn Dawud al-Saydilani"), he gathered and evaluated 122 legal rulings attributed to al-Saydilani across topics ranging from marriage (nikāḥ) to the status of female slaves who have borne children (ummahāt al-awlād). The study drew these rulings from classical Shafi'i reference texts and organized them in accordance with the legal classification and taxonomy of al-Nawawi's Minhaj al-Talibin.
