Khalid ibn Sulayman al-Muzayni is a Saudi scholar and academic specializing in Quranic studies, best known for his critical work on the occasions of revelation, al-Muharrar fi Asbab Nuzul al-Quran min Khilal al-Kutub al-Tisaa.
Academic Career and Research
Hailing from Buraydah in Saudi Arabia, al-Muzayni earned his doctorate from the Department of Quran and Its Sciences in the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. He subsequently taught as a faculty member at the university's branch in al-Qassim.
Al-Muzayni's scholarly research has focused on the principles and narrations concerning the occasions of Quranic revelation (asbab al-nuzul). In his doctoral treatise, published in two volumes under the title al-Muharrar fi Asbab Nuzul al-Quran min Khilal al-Kutub al-Tisaa (The Edited Compendium on the Occasions of Quranic Revelation Through the Nine Books), he conducted a comprehensive survey and critical evaluation of revelation-occasion reports across the Nine Books of Hadith, analyzing them in terms of both transmission (riwayatan) and textual content (dirayatan). In the theoretical conclusions of his study, he formulated a comprehensive definition of sabab al-nuzul derived from inductive analysis of textual evidence and outlined four essential pillars for identifying a valid occasion, noting that it requires an event or statement occurring after the advent of the prophetic mission.
Reception
His research on asbab al-nuzul has been recognized and recommended by contemporary specialists in Quranic sciences, including Musaid al-Tayyar, as a primary reference for the critical evaluation of revelation accounts.
