John Lyons is a British linguist known for his writings on general and theoretical linguistics, including Language and Linguistics: An Introduction (1981) .
Scholarly contribution
Lyons wrote for both specialized linguists and general educated audiences, addressing pure descriptive linguistics, historical linguistics, and broader interdisciplinary topics such as language and mind, society, and culture . In semantic theory, he is credited with formulating and naming the concept of the "etymological fallacy" (etymological fallacy), which describes the error of asserting that a word's meaning must strictly correspond to its historical etymological root in languages such as Greek, Latin, or Arabic . He argued that this reasoning relies on an unprovable underlying assumption that an inherent or natural connection exists between linguistic form and meaning .
In addition to introductory linguistics, his research contributed to grammatical and semantic theory through works such as Introduction to Theoretical Linguistics (1968) and Semantics (1977) .
