Jafar Sharaf al-Din is an Islamic scholar and author known for his twelve-volume reference work on Quranic studies, al-Mawsu‘a al-Qur’aniyya: Khasa’is al-Suwar (The Quranic Encyclopedia: Characteristics of the Surahs) .

Scholarly Work and Method

Sharaf al-Din compiled and structured al-Mawsu‘a al-Qur’aniyya: Khasa’is al-Suwar, which was published by Dar al-Taqrib bayn al-Madhahib al-Islamiyya in cooperation with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) . The project was presented as an initiative to fill a void in Islamic reference literature by facilitating access to Quranic meanings, fostering ecumenical rapprochement across diverse Islamic schools of thought, and supporting interfaith dialogue .

In the encyclopedia, Sharaf al-Din synthesized material from classical and modern sources across Quranic sciences and Arabic heritage . The work systematically examines each surah through up to eight analytical categories: its broader goals and purposes, the thematic interconnections among its verses, the underlying reasons for its structural ordering, its internal treasures, the stylistic language of revelation, its lexical meanings, an analytical question-and-answer format addressing reader inquiries, and its metaphorical and figurative expressions .

In terms of editorial methodology, citations to original sources were integrated directly into the introduction of each thematic subsection to assist readers . In later volumes of the encyclopedia, certain specialized sections—such as lexical or metaphorical analysis—were selectively omitted for shorter surahs that did not contain obscure phrasing or distinct figurative expressions, in order to prevent repetition .
