Abu Ya'qub Ishaq al-Qarrab (352–429 AH / 963–1038 CE) was a Persian hadith scholar, hafiz, and historian from Sarakhs who settled in Herat, known for his chronological biographical work Tarikh al-Sinin and his specialized hadith monograph Fada'il al-Ramy (The Merits of Archery) .

Lineage and Family Background

His full name was Ishaq ibn Ibrahim (also known by the kunya Abu Ishaq) ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sarakhsi al-Harawi . Later biographical authorities, such as Ibn Nuqta and Ibn Nasir al-Din, distinguished his father from an earlier scholar of the same nisba, Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sahl al-Qarrab (d. 354 AH) . His brother was the jurist and scholar Abu Muhammad Isma'il ibn Ibrahim al-Qarrab (d. 414 AH), and his maternal grandfather was the merchant Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Hafsawih .

Education and Scholarly Career

Al-Qarrab was born in 352 AH (963 CE) . He pursued hadith transmission extensively; according to the Herati historian Abu al-Nadr al-Fami, the number of his teachers exceeded 1,200 individuals . Among his notable instructors were his maternal grandfather Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Hafsawih, al-Abbas ibn al-Fadl al-Nadrawi, Zahir ibn Ahmad al-Sarakhsi, Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Sayyari, Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hammuyah al-Sarakhsi, Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Nu'aymi, and al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Sijzi . Al-Qarrab also transmitted traditions from younger contemporaries, including his associate the hafiz Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Wakhshi .

He became recognized as the principal hadith master (muhaddith) of Herat and Khurasan . Among those who narrated from him were Abu Isma'il al-Ansari (also known as Shaykh al-Islam al-Harawi), Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Abi Asim al-Saydalani, and al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Matt .

Among his most prominent contributions was Tarikh al-Sinin, a two-volume chronological reference compiling obituaries of scholars from the era of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ down to the compiler's own time . He also compiled Fada'il al-Ramy (The Merits of Archery), which documented prophetic traditions and early reports on martial training and archery for the cause of God .

Standing and Death

Biographers characterized al-Qarrab as an ascetic scholar who lived with minimal worldly possessions (zahid muqill min al-dunya) and possessed vast mastery over hadith literature . Abu Isma'il al-Ansari venerated him and relied upon his authoritative evaluations in transmitter criticism (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) .

Al-Qarrab died in the Islamic month of Sha'ban in 429 AH (1038 CE) at the age of 77 .
